POPS writes a postcard to Elgin from the rooftop swimming pool of a Florence hotel, three days before they returned to the United States. "Florence is pretty but it's been hot as hell," he wrote. "I don't know how they got this picture (of the famous, golden, 15th-century Gates of Paradise at the Baptistery of St. John). About all I could get were the backs of a million heads."
